Help in every province and territory

National lines first, then a full provincial/territorial directory drawn from public government and service listings (especially Canada.ca family violence services). Numbers change — verify on official sites when you call. Many lines help all genders even when historically branded for women; say clearly that you are a man seeking safety planning.

If you are in immediate danger

Call 911. If you cannot speak safely, leave the phone off the hook if trained responders will locate you, or use a code word with a trusted person. Clear browser history after visiting help sites; use private mode and Quick exit.

Canada-specific safety notes for men

Family law is provincial

Parenting time, support, and protection orders are handled under provincial/territorial family law. Criminal harassment/assault is federal Criminal Code. Get a family lawyer licensed in your province early if kids or property are involved.

Recording conversations

Federal law is generally one-party consent when you are a participant (Criminal Code s.184). Still get legal advice before relying on recordings in family court. Use our Canada recording helper.

Legal aid & victim services

Most provinces offer victim services and legal aid (income-tested). Start with 211, provincial victim services, or duty counsel at family court. Document incidents with our incident log.

Employment leave

Several provinces have domestic/sexual violence leave under employment standards. Ask 211 or a lawyer about leave, short-term job protection, and confidentiality at work.

If a line is “women’s”

Still call if it is the only 24/7 crisis number — ask for male victim referrals, shelter alternatives, and safety planning. Pair with 211 and VictimLink-style services that serve all victims of crime.

Indigenous supports

Hope for Wellness 1-855-242-3310 nationwide, plus regional Indigenous victim services listed under NWT, Ontario Talk4Healing, and local friendship centres via 211.
