At work
Work & reputation playbook
Two threats often hit men: a partner who targets your job, and a narcissistic boss or peer who runs the same control playbook at work. Panic helps them. Paper trails and demeanour help you.
Mindset
Work is not the place for the full story of your marriage. It is the place for facts, deliverables, and professionalism. Save emotional processing for a therapist or safe friend.
When a partner targets your job
- Calls/emails HR or your boss with accusations
- Shows up at the workplace to create a scene
- Uses “wellness checks” or false emergency narratives
- Sabotages sleep, childcare, or transport so you look unreliable
- Smear texts to coworkers or clients
What to do (calm sequence)
- Document every contact: date, channel, content, witnesses — use the workplace log.
- Do not spar in email with her on work systems. Move personal conflict off company channels.
- One factual note to manager/HR if interference is real: “I am handling a personal matter. If you receive unusual third-party contact about me, please forward it to me and HR. My work remains my priority.” Use work scripts.
- Protect access: change passwords, review emergency contacts, know badge/building rules.
- Performance is armour: meet deadlines, confirm instructions in writing, keep tone boring.
Narcissistic boss or peer
Same patterns, different stage: credit-stealing, public charm / private humiliation, moving goalposts, triangulation, smear if you set a boundary. Details: narcissistic boss guide.
HR & complaints
- HR protects the company first — still useful for a record
- Bring a timeline, not a manifesto
- Ask what process applies; take notes after every meeting
- Do not secretly record without checking law and policy
- Ally brief you can share: HR / manager brief
Online professional reputation
Pause posting about the relationship. Lock down LinkedIn privacy for non-connections. Screenshot false reviews or posts. Correct facts once, calmly — do not duel in comments. See public & smear and digital life.
